An Introdution To Tires Of Electric Mountain Bike

After introducing the motor and battery parts of electric bikes, there are more structures in the e-bikes worth exploring, such as the tires in this article.

What is the tire?

To answer this question, as we see tires everywhere in our daily life, have you found out what the differences are between the various types of tires? But we still have to start with the definition of bike tire to understand the e-bike tire better. Generally speaking, a bike tire is a rubber ring attached to the wheel with a tread. It is responsible for direct contact with the ground during riding and plays a vital role. With the right tires, your bike can take you almost anywhere, including slippery ice and muddy mountains.

Types of tires:

There are many different types of tires available for different roads, but most e-bikes today have inner tube tires that can maintain air pressure.

Tubeless tires are vacuum tires that use liquid sealant instead of inner tubes. Its outstanding feature is a reduction in the trouble caused by a flat tire. It has strong puncture resistance and lower rolling resistance, but is generally more expensive. It is also cumbersome to install and requires regular inspection and maintenance.

For electric mountain bike tires, the most important thing for riders to study is the outer tire. The tread, width, and hardness of the outer tire have a great impact on the riding experience.

If we look at the tires of some electric mountain bikes, we can see that their surfaces are covered at intervals with bumps of different shapes and sizes. These bumps are called "tread".

The spacing, shape, material, and size of the tread determine the road conditions that the tire can adapt to. If the thread is aggressive, this tire may be used to deal with complex road conditions and is generally more suitable for full-suspension e-bikes heading into the mountains. While low-profile tires can cope with road conditions that are relatively simple, they have lower rolling resistance and are better for climbing. Slick-tread tires are suitable for gentle road surfaces and are generally used on commuter bikes. There is also urban leisure for the positioning of the city tire to retain some tread, and there are some differences between urban tires and slick tread tires.

In addition, the width of the outer tire also determines the positioning of the electric mountain bike.

Common tire widths vary in size, generally between 2 and 3 inches. To cope with riding on slippery snow or soft sandy beaches, tire manufacturers increase the thickness of tires which increases rolling resistance and contact with the ground. These tires are uniformly called "fat tires" which typically have a diameter of 26 inches and a width of more than 3 inches.

Size

Generally, three types of wheel diameters are used for electric mountain bike tires, 26-inch, 27.5-inch, and 29-inch. Manufacturers would mark wheel diameter information on tires (as well as model, specification, tire pressure range, stab-proof rating, etc. You can also find them on their official website).

In terms of wheel diameter choice, 29-inch wheels are more popular with cyclists. The reason, according to mechanical analysis, is that the 29-inch wheels have higher shafts, better grip, and lower rolling resistance during the ride, which makes it easier for the bikes to ride through obstacles and helps them climb steeper slopes. On steep hills and corners, however, the 29-inch rear wheels are less nimble and comfortable.

Therefore, experienced mountain bikers might opt for a mix and match, with a 20-inch front wheel and a 27.5-inch rear wheel for a more nimble and cool ride. But the modification of wheel diameter is not only time-consuming and laborious but also expensive. If you want to do DIY, you need to consider more than this before starting.

An introduction to Bafang Mid-Drive Motor M620 (Bafang Ultra Motor)

An introduction to Bafang Mid-Drive Motor M620 (Bafang Ultra Motor) The Bafang M620, also known as G510 & Ultra, is a high-power, large-capacity mid-drive motor introduced by Bafang in 2018. Since then, it has undergone multiple updates and improvements to its controller and transmission system. Many manufacturers of electric bikes (including our Frey bike models) choose to use it as the Bafang eMTB drive system, not only because of its outstanding performance in mountain bike riding but also because Bafang offers customizable options to meet the demand of mountain bike riders for more power.   As for the performance of the Bafang M620, you can refer to the review of EX by Michael ( it may be somewhat different from the current M620, after all, this review was published in 2020, and Bafang would improve their motor every year ): Powerful : 1000W nominal, 1500 peak, tunable pass 2000W.    While torque remains constant at 160 Nm in stock form, the nylon gear was ...
